In this months National Geographic magazine there is an article on the Redwood forests in California. After reading issue after issue I haven’t been satisfied with National Geographic in a long time, but this issue has brought a lot of excitement in my world especially as I’m very active with camping and hiking through Redwood parks in NorCal. (Anything south of Santa Cruz is not worth the drive in my opinion).

For years I’ve always wondered what the best way would be to get a clear shot of a super tall redwood and these guys did it with proper approvals of course. Lots of steep climbing on other trees to get the right angle for compositing such a large image would have been complex. I’ve hiked into the hills just to pick off some good shots of tall trees or use a Fisheye lens, but nothing of this magnitude and clarity.

Keep California’s State parks and forests open to the public!

Cool…if you have an ipoo you can now get Latitude working properly! I have a few friends that hike with me that wish they had Latitude. :P

Go check Latitude for iphone:

mytracks

The My Tracks update today reminded me that I should tell everyone if you are not using the app by now, then you need to start using it especially if you are active and hike/explore outside a lot. For example, I used My Tracks the other day to map out the Golden Gate Park Disc Golf course for Google Maps users. All you gotta do is load the map on your Android phone (G1 in my case, iphone works too) and you will find all the tees and baskets for every hole on the course! :) Mind you I didnt add every possible tee configuration, but one waypoint is good enough for the general direction to throw your disc. I can add other baskets later no prob, the editor in My maps is intutive and easy to use. Let me know if you map a Disc golf course in the Bay area, I’m on a roll!

OH – Check this out..today I signed up for a Google Voice account. Pretty nifty and made a few calls to my friends in India, Jordan, Romaina, and UK all under 20 bucks…amazing! Just the other day I purchased a calling card (not enjoying the skype experience btw) that said “No Lies” Calling Card to Jordan, hehe. Never again will I have to use calling cards again, thank you Google!
